Massage Therapy

Far beyond simply "feeling good," massage has an impressive range of therapeutic effects. Across the country, people from all walks of life are discovering the health-enhancing benefits of massage therapy.

An increasing number of research studies show massage reduces heart rate, lowers blood pressure, increases blood circulation and lymph flow, relaxes muscles, improves range of motion and increases endorphins which enhances medical treatment.

Using a variety of hands-on methods, a massage therapist stretches and loosens muscles and connective tissues which greatly improves the blood flow to the heart and the movement of lymph fluid throughout the body. The massage motion speeds the removal of metabolic waste products resulting from exercise and inactivity, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to reach cells and tissues.

Massage Therapy is provided through Health & Wellness Services at Audrain Medical Center and is located in the J.B. & Greeta B. Arthur Cancer Center.

Types of Massage

Swedish Massage helps the body eliminate toxins, improves blood and lymph circulation, increases range of motion in the joints and alleviates muscle tension and soreness. It promotes relaxation and reduces pain through the release of endorphins.

Stone Massage  incorporates the use of warm or cool stoneswith special massage techniques to promote relaxation.

Deep Tissue Massage is also known as myofascial release and is deeper than Swedish Massage. It focuses on lasting pain relief and treats the whole body. It is aimed at releasing tension in the fascia (tissue that surrounds and connects the muscles, bones and internal organs) as a means of restoring balance to the body and its systems.

Sports Massagefocuses on a specific problem area, can assist in the treatment of certain injuries and help in the prevention of sports injuries.

Pregnancy Massage helps mom's body to eliminate waste products through the lymphatic and circulatory system, which combats fatigue and helps the mother feel more energetic. It relieves many discomforts during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches, edema, swollen ankles and feet. Massage increases general blood circulation, which brings more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of both mother and fetus. Massage can also be used to make the birthing process easier and more comfortable.

Infant Massage improves circulation, strengthens immunity, enhances neurological development and stimulates digestion, providing relief of gas and colic. The attachment bond of being held and touched helps make children more compassionate, loving and relaxed.

Reflexology is a therapeutic massage that isolates points on the foot or hand which relate to the different parts of the body. It can both relax and de-stress.

Sea Salt Glow & Sugar Glow uses marine salts and sugar cane based large granules mixed with oils in a dry spa environment to exfoliate and detoxify the skin, leavin in feeling fresh and glowing.

Aromatherapy is combined with massage using essential oils to help with relaxation and stress.
