SSM Health Care and Audrain Medical Center, Mexico, MO, signed an agreement last Thursday under which SSM will own and operate the medical center and its nine MedChoice rural clinics effective April 1, 2013. In making the announcement, SSM also said that it would form a Mid- Missouri Region because of the proximity of the medical center and its clinics to SSM’s St. Mary’s Health Center, Jefferson City. Audrain Medical Center is pleased to announce that Gene Thomas, DO has successfully completed recertification from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) in the area of Critical Care Medicine. The examination is designed to evaluate the extent of the candidate’s knowledge and clinical judgment in the areas in which a critical care physician should demonstrate a high level of competence. Expertise in the broad domain of critical care medicine, and the diagnosis and treatment of both common and rare conditions that have important consequences for patients, are assessed. [read more]
Audrain Medical Center is very proud to announce our new sleep lab. With the tremendous help of the Auxiliary, AMC was able to move the sleep lab to a more preferred part of the hospital. A total remodel of the rooms including painting, décor accessories, comforters and flat screen televisions makes it more comfortable to the sleep lab patients. The newly remodeled rooms have more of a home feel to them which will in turn provide better quality sleep studies. The new beds will better serve patients of all sizes. In addition, each room has its own private shower. We have also installed new equipment which allows AMC to provide patients with the latest sleep technology. With this move, it will allow us in the future to expand our lab to a four patient lab and lessen our wait times. [read more]

Aaron Witte, PT, recently completed advanced training to become a Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults (CEEAA). The training consisted of three weekend courses at KU Medical Center. The program was designed to enhance the ability to appropriately examine and provide quality exercise that will yield optimal benefits for the aging adult. [read more]
Audrain Medical Center announced that is successfully conducted its first MRI scan on a patient with the Revo MRITM SureScan® pacing system.
The Revo MRITM SureScan® pacemaker is the first MR-Conditional pacemaker system to be designed, tested and FDA approved for use in the MRI environment. (MR-Conditional is a term used to indicate that a device may be used in an MRI environment under certain conditions, such as certain type of MRI scanner or scanner settings.) [read more]
Susan Quinlan, PT, at Audrain Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Services (Healthworks), recently completed a course to learn effective techniques for improving speed, agility and quickness for athletes of all ages and abilities. The training consisted of a two-day course in St. Louis. The course was designed to assist in identifying common mistakes in acceleration, deceleration and change of direction in order to teach correct mechanics. [read more]
Shellie Shaw, Registered Dietitian at Audrain Medical Center has recently passed the examination to become a Certified LEAP Therapist.
The LEAP Program (Lifestyle, Eating and Performance) is a strategic method of dealing with the dietary components of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), migraines, fibromyalgia, joint and muscle pain, fatigue, vomiting, chronic sinusitis and other symptoms caused by delayed food sensitivities. Ron Bracht, PT, recently completed advanced training for Vestibular Rehabilitation in May. The training consisted of a three-day course at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences in Pennsylvania. The program was designed to provide an update regarding the treatment of persons with balance/vestibular disorders and the underlying science. [read more]
Audrain Medical Center is pleased to announce the addition of Aqua Lymphatic Therapy (ALT) for Lymphedema patients. Jenea Smith, PT, CLT, ALT recently completed 56 contact hours of training for the management and treatment of upper and lower extremity lymphedema with Dorit Tidhar, MPT, ALT, CDT. Dorit designed The Tidhar Method© to help people who suffer from lymphedema maintain and improve the results of conventional treatment. It was the first time this certification course was offered in the United States. The course was presented by the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing and Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and was funded by Mid-Missouri Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Jenea becomes one of the few therapists certified to perform ALT in the United States.

Audrain Medical Center’s Imaging Department has a new tool in the fight against breast cancer. AMC recently implemented the use of Breast MRI. Breast MRI uses magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the breast and its internal structures. MRI of the breast is not a replacement for mammography or ultrasound imaging but rather a supplemental tool. [read more]
Audrain Medical Center has been awarded a 3-year term of accreditation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). MRI is a noninvasive medical test that utilizes magnetic fields to produce anatomical images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. [read more]

Susan Quinlan, PT, CLT-UE recently completed 90 contact hours of training for the management and treatment of upper extremity Lymphedema with Klose Training & Consulting. Susan became proficient in all aspects of Lymphedema Management and demonstrated her knowledge in the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system. She becomes one of the few therapists certified to perform upper extremity Manual Lymph Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy in mid-Missouri. [read more]

Dr. Ned Rodes, internationally noted cancer researcher and native Mexicoan was a renowned surgical oncologist who shared his patients hope for survival, their fears, disappointments and heartbreaks that often followed those early cancer treatments. Dr. Rodes had initially studied oncology because “he wanted to be involved in finding a solution to cancer.” He was confident that his career in oncology would only last a few years, as he was sure a solution to cancer was on the cusp of being discovered. Audrain Medical Center is asking for assistance from the public in slowing the spread of the H1N1 flu by discouraging visitation of hospitalized patients by person of any age with fever, sore throat, cough, muscle aches, nausea and/or vomiting/diarrhea and any persons less than 19 years of age. On October 1, 2009, Audrain Medical Center will transfer responsibility for ambulance services to the Audrain Ambulance District (AAD). The AMC Board of Directors, at its December 2007 meeting, voted unanimously to approve a resolution that would not renew AMC’s ambulance service license when it expired on November 30, 2009. This decision set in motion the “Citizens for Proposition A” committee which worked diligently to obtain over 1,000 signatures on a petition to form an Ambulance District, which resulted in a June 3, 2008 election gaining 65% favorable votes to 35% negative votes. Prevention and early detection of breast cancer has come to the forefront in healthcare across the United States and world. Many women who have had surgery for breast cancer develop Lymphedema, swelling in the arm or chest due to damage to the lymph nodes and/or lymph vessels from radiation or during surgery. This swelling can cause chronic medical, physical and psychosocial problems, all affecting a woman’s quality of life. Lymphedema affects nearly 40% of breast cancer survivors. [read more]

Ron Bracht, physical therapist at Audrain Medical Center’s Healthworks recently received certification in Vestibular Rehabilitation from the American Physical Therapy Association. Ron attended a 37 hour course at Emory University in Georgia. Two written tests and a video recognition competency exam were passed to achieve this certification. “We are very fortunate to have individuals at Audrain Medical Center that have the drive to continue their education and provide these specialty services to the community,” states Cindi Heese, Director of Healthworks. Jeffrey Tiede, Joseph Meyer and Richard Wolkowitz are offering Balloon Kyphoplasty, a minimally invasive treatment option for patients suffering from spinal fractures due to osteoporosis. Balloon Kyphoplasty is designed to correct spinal deformity due to osteoporotic fractures, significantly reducing back pain and improving a patient’s ability to return to daily activities. On Tuesday, October 28, central Missouri healthcare providers came together for an exercise to test equipment and procedures they would use if hospitals, nursing homes or other healthcare facilities had to be evacuated during a disaster, creating a need for large number of patients to be triaged or treated at an alternate care site. At this time of year, head injuries, especially concussions, are a prime concern. Football is a contact sport with high potential of concussions, but it is not the only sport in which a head injury can occur.
